July 2003 - Tote & Mark in San Francisco - Settling In
A spectacular apartment and a beautiful view
One of a pair of windmills at the end of Golden Gate Park. They were originally built in the early 1900's and pumped water to a reservoir.
In the foreground are beach grasses. All of Golden Gate Park, now mostly wooded, was once sand dunes. Since the park was "reclaimed" from dunes, it is called "the largest human-made park in the world."
Golden Gate Park is not the only thing that replaced sand dunes. Early pictures of San Francisco, some on display at the Maritime Museum, show big dunes running through what are now built up parts of the city.
