We went for a walk around their neighborhood and within blocks encountered a shrine.  Sayaka demonstrated shrine etiquette for us. 

Every shrine has a place like this to wash one's hands before approaching the altar building.  Sayaka also explained that coins with holes in them -- 5 and 50 yen coins are the luckiest to pitch in the offering box.  We clapped and rang the bells, too.
