New Paltz was a major hippie town, and it still has a relaxed, alternative vibe. (That's the first time I've ever used that word "vibe." I can say "vibe" when I'm talking about hippie culture, right?)

This is a sculpture embedded in the wall of the shower in our room at the New Paltz hostel. Yes, that's a desicated fish in a specimen jar.

The hostel looks recently remodeled and refitted. Everything was tidy, neat, and lovely. But the refitting left some hints, like this one, of the old days. We also had a giant, luridly colored painting of a banana flower on the wall above our bed.
