Both sides of the Delaware had canals to move coal and freight between Philadelphia and New York City. Built in the 1830s, the canals declined in importance with the development of rail lines.

Both Pennsylvania and New Jersey have preserved long sections of their canals and towpaths. It looks as if this has kept most of the banks of the river in public hands.

Riding along these shady, uncroweded trails was great.
