Sofia has a mosque downtown. We were told that most of the mosques were abandoned during the Communist era. One tour guide said that the Communist regime secretly dynamited many mosque minarets during a big thunderstorm so that people would believe that the mosques were unlucky and refrain from using them. Cute story.
