To the west, Sultan Ahmed Mosque, more usually called the Blue Mosque. The Blue Mosque was built in the early 1600s on the site of the palace of the Byzantine emperors. (Large sections of the mosque rest on the foundations of the old palace.) The Blue Mosque replaced Hagia Sophia as the Ottoman Empire's imperial mosque.
