This is the New Mosque. Mothers of sultans ran the harem and had great power in the court. This mosque was started by one of them. The location was, at least in part, determined by a rivalry between Jewish merchants who dominated this area and their Turkish counterparts.

The mosque wasn't finished and the partially completed structure fell apart. Construction was resumed by another sultan's mother who also constructed the nearby Spice Market as part of the mosque complex.
