Looking across the Golden Horn at the Old City. The tower on the far shore is at Topkapi Palace and the mosque and minarets to its right are Hagia Sophia.

If that's the Old City over there, this must be the new city over here. And in modern times that's true. In Byzantine times, this side had a walled city called Galata, inhabited by Genovese. (The Byzantines slaughtered them on one occasion.)

There are many old buildings on this side, but it's a much less touristy and much more normal part of Istanbul.
